Being nearly 6’ tall, shopping for clothes can be quite frustrating. While the internet is a great resource for finding clothing, I don’t always want to shop online. Sometimes I need something new right away and don’t have time to wait days or sometimes even weeks for my order to arrive. It’s also nice being able to try items on before you buy them. I’ve come up with some shopping tips for tall girls to keep in mind when trying to look for clothing at regular stores.
First, take advantage of the trends for longer tanks and tunics–it’s a great thing for tall girls since it is so much easier to find shirts and tank tops at regular stores. Also, try to find v-neck, scoop neck, or button up tees–any style of shirt that is open around the neck is great if you’re taller and have broad shoulders. Stick with short sleeves as you won’t need to worry about sleeve length. Three quarter length styles work too.
Try styles like skinny jeans and leggings. Since they are designed to be tight around the legs, they won’t hang awkwardly above the ankle like most types of pants that are too short. However, still make sure you try them on before you buy them just to be sure. But if you’re planning on mostly wearing them with boots, no one will notice if they are a little too short.
Look for crops and carpri style pants, they are supposed to be short! Capri leggings are great too. If you want jeans, they do sell long length pants in 34” inseams at places like Delia’s, American Eagle, Target and even Walmart.
Pencil skirts are a great piece to have, and you can get away with buying them from regular stores. Look for slightly longer styles, that way they won’t look too short when worn on your tall body frame.
Don’t be afraid to look in the plus size department. A lot of trendy plus size shops carry shirts that are very long in length, and you can always get them tailored if needed. If you are plus sized, this is good news.
If finding shoes that fit is an issue, try looking for open toed sandals or flip flops. A lot of stores carry them in tons of trendy styles all the way up to size 11. I wear a 12 wide in regular women’s shoes, but can normally wear an 11 in flip flops since they are less restricting.
Go for accessories like fashion scarves or thick belts, they’re great for tall girls and can be found at any store. Fashion scarves are trendy, cute and help draw attention towards the center of the body. Tall women can pull off chunky belts well due to their longer torsos.
Don’t forget that the internet is still an excellent resource when it comes to finding clothes as a tall girl. There are many shops online that sell clothing for taller women. Also, if you have big feet, there are even stores that sell women’s shoes in extended sizes.
It isn’t impossible, however, to find pieces in normal stores if you know what to look for. Take a look around, don’t be afraid to try things on–you might be surprised as to what you can discover!
